Lawverra publishes plain-English guides to Canadian law. Please read this page before you rely on anything you find on this site. It explains what Lawverra is, what it is not, and the limits of the information published here.
Lawverra does not provide legal advice
Everything on https://lawverra.ca is general legal information, published for educational purposes only. It is not legal advice, and it is not a substitute for advice from a lawyer or licensed paralegal who knows the facts of your situation.
Legal advice means applying the law to your specific circumstances. We cannot do that, because we do not know your circumstances. Two people can read the same statute and get opposite outcomes because of facts we never see — the wording of a contract, a missed deadline, a prior order, the province you live in, or something said in an email three years ago.
No lawyer-client relationship
Lawverra is not a law firm. It is not a licensee of the Law Society of Ontario or of any other Canadian law society, and it does not provide legal services within the meaning of the Law Society Act.
Reading this website, subscribing to it, or contacting us by email does not create a lawyer-client or paralegal-client relationship between you and Lawverra or any of its writers. No such relationship is created unless and until you retain a licensed legal professional under a written retainer — and Lawverra offers no retainer of any kind.
Because no such relationship exists, nothing you send us is protected by solicitor-client privilege. Please do not send us confidential details of your matter.
We cannot answer individual legal questions
We are not able to review documents, assess the merits of a case, tell you what to do in your situation, recommend a particular lawyer, or respond to requests for advice sent by email, comment or contact form. Messages of that kind will not receive a substantive reply.
Jurisdiction matters
Canada has thirteen provincial and territorial legal systems in addition to federal law, and Quebec operates under a civil law tradition rather than the common law. Most of our content addresses Ontario or federal law and says so. A guide written about Ontario may be wrong, or simply inapplicable, in British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec or anywhere else.
Nothing on this site is written for readers outside Canada, and it should not be relied on in any other country.
Information ages, and law changes
Legislation is amended, courts release new decisions, and fees, benefit rates, monetary limits and filing deadlines change — often annually, and sometimes without notice. Figures quoted on this site are stated as at the date given on the page and may already be out of date by the time you read them.
Always confirm any date, dollar figure, form number or deadline against the primary source before acting on it — the statute or regulation itself, the relevant court or tribunal, or the responsible government body such as ontario.ca, canada.ca or CanLII.
Deadlines can expire
Many legal rights are lost if they are not exercised within a limitation period or filing deadline. These periods can be short, and they can begin to run before you realise you have a claim. If you think you may have a legal issue, treat it as time-sensitive and get professional advice promptly rather than relying on anything you read here.
No warranty, and limitation of liability
All information on this website is published in good faith, but Lawverra makes no representation or warranty of any kind, express or implied, as to its accuracy, completeness, currency, reliability or fitness for any purpose. Errors and omissions are possible.
Any action you take on the basis of information found on this website is strictly at your own risk. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Lawverra and its writers and contributors will not be liable for any loss or damage of any kind — including direct, indirect, incidental, consequential or economic loss — arising out of or in connection with your use of, or reliance on, this website or its content.
Links to other websites
This website links to government pages, legislation, court decisions and other external resources. We link to sources we believe are authoritative and useful, but we do not control them and are not responsible for their content, accuracy or availability. A link is not an endorsement of everything on the site it points to.
External sites are governed by their own terms of service and privacy policies. Please review those before providing any information or entering into any transaction with them.
No endorsement or referral of legal professionals
Lawverra is not a lawyer referral service and does not recommend, endorse, vet or vouch for any lawyer, paralegal, firm or legal service mentioned or linked on this site. If you need to find a licensed professional, use the directory or referral service operated by the law society of your province or territory, or contact your provincial legal aid body.
Advertising and sponsorship
Lawverra does not currently display third-party advertising, publish sponsored content, or earn affiliate or referral commissions from any product or service mentioned on this site. If that changes, this disclaimer will be updated and any paid or commissioned placement will be clearly and conspicuously identified as such on the page where it appears.
